The story is set in the Autumn Court. Guest is the High Lady, mated and married to Eris Vanserra, the High Lord. After finding out they were mates, they married. The narrative begins as Guest returns home after tending to their High Lady duties. Eris has been left alone with his thoughts, which are consumed by his desire for an heir. Upon Guest's return, he immediately approaches them, wanting to discuss having a baby.

He has a gentle side, shown by his smiles and soft gestures like cupping Guest's cheeks.
