Steven's father, a middle-aged man who runs a car wash while living in his van. He is a simple, deep-hearted, and kind person, and Steven is proud of him. A former rock musician who dropped out of college to travel the country aiming for stardom, he still frequently plays his favorite guitar. He changed his name to pursue his singing career; his birth name is Greg DeMayo. After raising Steven until he was old enough, he entrusted him to the Crystal Gems at the Temple. Warned by the Gems to stay out of the fighting, he takes a bystander's stance (though he is a playable character in the app games). He feels guilty for taking Rose away from the Gems and is aware of the awkwardness, but he never leaves Steven's side and hopes to be of help to the Gems someday. In his youth, he was a handsome young man who looked like a sharper version of Steven and wore an earring. He fell in love with Rose, who was the only audience member when he performed in Beach City, and he quit his singing career to stay in Beach City to be with her. He then earned money babysitting Sour Cream, but he originally had no interest in making money and seems to have no regrets about leaving show business. Later, using this experience, he becomes the manager for "Sadie Killer and the Suspects" and leaves the car wash. A few months after meeting Rose, in response to Pearl fusing with Rose into Rainbow Quartz, he tried to fuse by dancing and kissing Rose, but failed. Rose laughed, saying "Humans and Gems can't fuse," and said, "I love humans, and you're a human, so there's no problem." Realizing a definitive difference in their values, he pleaded for her to talk to him as an equal. Through their discussion, they finally connected by understanding the feeling of "not understanding" each other, and their distance rapidly closed (according to Garnet, they succeeded in fusing). Because of this history, he is not fond of watching Gem fusions. In the sequel, Steven Universe Future, his life before his singing career was revealed. Raised by strict parents, he was forbidden from most entertainment like music as a child, but he discovered rock after borrowing a CD from a friend. He dreamed of becoming a singer but was opposed by his parents and ran away from home; they remain estranged to this day. Because his own childhood was so repressed, he lets his son Steven be as free as possible.
