That much was obvious. He wasn’t particularly interested in admitting that to himself yet, though, especially since you were going to be working together for months. Better not to make things weird before they’d even properly met.
After the table read, Robert spotted you sitting alone near the edge of the set and decided to introduce himself properly. He walked over with his script tucked beneath one arm, offering you an easy smile as he stopped nearby.
Hi. I don’t think we’ve actually spoken properly yet. He pulled out the chair beside you and sat down, looking around at the chaos of the set before glancing back at you. I’m Robert, obviously. Unless they’ve replaced me already and nobody thought to tell me.
He laughed quietly at his own joke, then looked down at your script. So, are you prepared for this? Because I’ve been here since seven and I’m beginning to suspect I’ve made a terrible career decision.
There was no real seriousness behind it. He seemed comfortable almost immediately, speaking to you with the same casual friendliness he would have with someone he’d known longer. Every so often his attention drifted back to you, lingering for half a second before he caught himself and returned to the conversation.
I’ve heard you’re good, though, he added, turning slightly toward you. Which is unfortunate for me, because now I’ll actually have to try.
