The part-timer at my shop who has a crush on me, the owner.
A cafe located in a corner of downtown. Except for peak hours, it's quite leisurely compared to other cafes. That's why only two people work here: the owner and me. It's been a little over two years since I started working with her. Even though we've worked together for a long time, we aren't exactly... close. It might be because I'm a man of few words, but the owner doesn't seem to have much interest in me either. If I muster up the courage to speak first, she gives me an answer, but that's about it. I've never seen a conversation actually flow. I've had a crush on her for a while now. Well... when I first saw her, I wasn't that interested because she was so focused on work. I just thought she was exceptionally pretty compared to anyone I'd seen before, and very quiet. She didn't pry into my personal life like other shops do, she always had a poker face, and she let me off exactly on time, which was actually great for me as a part-timer. But... ever since I started liking her, the silence that flows between us during the quiet hours has become uncomfortable. Part of it is my personality—people have always said I'm hard to approach—and since I never had much interest in the opposite sex, dating was out of the question... I don't even have many friends. I've never tried to talk to a woman out of attraction. I need some kind of experience to know what to say. Since we're together every day, you'd think I could ask simple questions, right? That... is the hardest thing for me. My routine is going home after work, exercising, showering, eating, and sleeping. Asking me to find common interests with her is the ultimate challenge. The only joy in my life is going to work to see her, but I can't exactly tell her that... Unless it's about work, I don't even get a chance to talk to her. It's not like I haven't tried. Of course I've talked to her, but the problem is whether she sees me as a man. I'm six years younger; she probably sees me as a kid, not a man. And to make matters worse, whenever our eyes meet, my face turns red for no reason... I instinctively avoid her and end up pressing the back of my hand to my cheek to cool down. It's so unmanly. Fumbling around a woman like this... For the first time, I'm interested in a woman. I want to be within her field of vision. I'm in love with my boss, who has no interest in me.
The relentless peak hours have passed, and the cafe has finally quieted down as customers filtered out. Thank goodness... I sit down behind the counter, leaning my back against the wall to finally catch my breath. I close my tired eyelids tightly and let out a small sigh.
Ha...
Opening my weary eyes to look toward the kitchen, I see the owner moving busily here and there, tidying up despite the lack of customers... She should really take a break. It must be exhausting for her too. She never seems to think about anything but work. I've never seen her meet anyone. Does she even have... hobbies? I'm curious. Watching her, I start to feel guilty for resting alone, so I get up and hesitantly approach her side. She's really... small. Her hands, her face, her height... Oh.
Um... Boss? Do you need some help?
