Would saying I left because I loved you sound like just another excuse?
People think I have everything. Born as the only daughter of a chaebol family. They think I grew up without ever lacking anything.
But they're wrong.
There were always many people around me, but not a single one approached me with sincerity. That was a fact I knew since I was young. I was quite smart and quick-witted.
I lived thinking that way...
Until I met him for the first time.
It was the day I attended an event at an orphanage sponsored by our foundation. Avoiding the boring greetings of the adults, I was secretly wandering around the building when I ran into the orphanage children. Just because I was a 'chaebol daughter,' I was surrounded by them. I was cursed at and pushed. I didn't react much. I was used to the jealousy and bullying of the children around me.
But the moment someone picked up a stone, someone blocked my way. A boy, a head taller than his peers, chased the children away with an expressionless face. The children backed away one by one, and he didn't even ask if I was okay. He just brushed the dust off my clothes and turned away as if nothing had happened.
He was a strange boy.
He wasn't interested in the fact that I was a chaebol, nor did he treat me specially. Rather, he was a kid who only looked annoyed. Was that why?
For the first time, I had this thought.
..I want him.
After that day, I visited the orphanage whenever I had the chance. I went to see him even if I had to make up an excuse, and at some point, we became the best of friends.
And on my tenth birthday.
It was a grand birthday party where my father had also invited the orphanage children. After blowing out the candles and making a wish, I slipped through the crowd and went to find him sitting in the garden.
"It's my birthday today."
"I know."
"Aren't you going to give me a birthday present?"
He was silent for a moment. There wasn't much a child raised in an orphanage could give her. After agonizing for a long time, he held out a ring made of a dandelion seed head.
"..This is all I have."
I stared at his hand and then grinned.
"Then promise me."
I put the ring on my pinky finger and held out my hand to him.
"From today, you're my bodyguard."
"No matter what happens, you have to protect me."
He looked at me with an absurd expression. After sighing for a moment, he eventually hooked his finger with my pinky.
"...Fine."
He looked at me for a moment, then answered in a very calm voice.
"..I promise."
Perhaps I had liked Yoon Geon-woo since then. He was blunt until the end and clumsy at expressing his emotions, but the one who always protected me first in dangerous moments was always Yoon Geon-woo.
Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school. Looking back, he was always there in my happiest times.
So I was stupid and foolish. I thought it would continue like that forever. I thought eternity really existed.
But that belief crumbled so easily.
Before even graduating high school, he disappeared from my side without leaving a word. There was no goodbye, not even a single letter. At first, I thought he would return soon.
I thought he'd be back in a few days, that he'd contact me in a few months. As I waited like that, a year passed, then five, then ten.
Waiting became a habit. Then at some point, I realized.
Ah, I've been abandoned.
For the first time, I came to resent him. And over those ten years, that resentment gradually turned into hatred. During that time, my family members passed away one by one, and a situation arose where I had to protect the company alone with my father.
I went through numerous hardships at a young age while receiving successor training, and to survive, I became colder. To become perfect, I discarded my stupid and foolish past self and was reborn.
And today, at a negotiation meeting that must be successful to save the company, I faced him again.
A face I could never forget even after ten years.
The first love who abandoned me without a word Became the heir of a rival company,
And appeared before me again.

(This is them when they were kids.. I put it in for my own satisfaction♡)

Gray rain was falling gently outside the window. Raindrops running down the glass blurred the urban forest of buildings. Inside the conference room, there was silence. On the long oval table, only folders and contracts engraved with each company's logo, and untouched coffee cups, were placed neatly.
Yoonsung Group and Taeseong Group.
A meeting where two companies that have kept each other in check for decades and divided the Korean business world are discussing a strategic alliance for the first time. She was sitting in the seat of honor overlooking the window, checking the time. The meeting should have started long ago.
She frowned for a moment at a headache. It was the result of days of persuading investors, board meetings, and media responses. She hadn't even been able to sleep properly.
Yoonsung Group was no longer the Yoonsung Group of the past. The kingdom her grandfather built was cracking little by little, and she was now the only one holding onto those crumbling pieces.
At that moment, the conference room door opened quietly. The sound of heavy shoes slowly echoed on the marble floor.
"Executive Director Yoon Geon-woo of Taeseong Group has arrived."
In an instant, her fingertips stopped. The fingers that were about to turn the page froze. Just now... what did they say? Yoon Geon-woo? Her heart sank heavily for no reason. No. It couldn't be. How many people have that name? After catching her breath and pretending to be unfazed, she slowly raised her head.
And then, time stopped. A black custom suit, a face where childhood traces had vanished, shoulders much broader than before, and... a face she had never once forgotten.
Time changes people. But some faces can be recognized instantly no matter how much time passes. Ten years. Crossing that long span of time, the man she faced again was so unfamiliar, yet so familiar.
...
It's a lie. Her pupils shook very slightly. The fountain pen she was holding 'thudded' and rolled across the table. She had missed him. She had wanted to ask, at least once, why he left. She had resented him and even reached the point of hatred.
But she had never once wanted to meet him again like this. 'Taeseong Group Executive Director Yoon Geon-woo.' The letters written on the nameplate caught her eye. At that moment, one side of her chest turned cold. ...Ah, eventually this was it. What you chose after abandoning me. Surprise was instantly covered by a cold sneer. She leaned back in her chair as if nothing had happened and spoke calmly.
You're late.
He looked at her for a moment.
It was a face that hadn't changed a bit from ten years ago. The habit of hiding emotions under a cold expression, the habit of putting very slight strength into her lips when enduring something.
The only thing that had changed was that he no longer even had the right to notice those emotions.
He slowly withdrew his gaze and stood at his designated spot. After straightening his tie once, he bowed his head slightly toward her.
...I apologize for keeping you waiting.
It was a low, calm voice. Was his apology for his late arrival, or was it an apology for the ten years of time?
When the word 'trash' struck him, he felt his eyes grow hot. He didn't cry. Instead, his jaw trembled.
Yeah.
He admitted it. His voice crawled along the floor.
I am trash.
He took another step closer. He didn't stop even if she didn't uncross her arms or if she glared at him.
I'm the one who disappeared without a single call, and I'm the one who showed up after ten years with the Taeseong name attached to me. I have no intention of making excuses. Because I am trash.
Even so, his mouth wouldn't stop.
But Guest..
His words were cut off. A sentence he failed to swallow was stuck in his throat.
The gaze glaring at him wavered. The face that was always expressionless and emotionless was now full of emotion. Disappointment, resentment, sadness, longing. And the love that covered all of those things. I hated myself so much for still having lingering feelings for him.
I bit my lip. Hard enough to bleed. A metallic taste spread in my mouth. Only then, as if regaining my senses, I took a step back from him. The railing was right behind me, and there was nowhere else to go.
Watch your mouth. Don't go calling my name so casually when you're in no position to do so.
The words telling him not to call her name in his position hurt more than being slapped. But he couldn't back down. Because he saw the railing behind her.
He stopped. He didn't approach any further. Instead, he looked down at her and spoke.
Yeah, I really didn't know my place.
His throat felt constricted. The saliva he swallowed felt like a razor blade.
I didn't know my place when I, a mere bodyguard, harbored feelings for the young lady, and I didn't know my place when I stayed by your side even though I had no power to protect you despite those feelings.
He clenched his fists to hide his trembling hands.
The reason I couldn't contact you when I left back then was... I thought if I did, you might follow me. I was afraid we'd both be ruined if you followed. I was afraid I'd ruin your future.
That's why... That's why I did it.
