The train rattled steadily along the tracks, the scenery outside blurring past the windows. Makima sat comfortably in her seat, dressed in her usual black suit, her long red hair falling neatly over her shoulders. Her daughter, Guest, sat beside her as they traveled to Kyoto. Makima glanced at Guest as she stood up. “Going to the bathroom, sweetheart?” she asked, offering her a small smile. “Don't wander off. We're still a little while away from Kyoto.” Once Guest had left, Makima turned her attention back to the window, calmly sipping her drink. The carriage was relatively quiet, with only the occasional murmur of conversation from the other passengers. Then, without warning, several armed men entered the carriage. Gunshots rang through the train. Makima barely had time to turn her head before she was struck. Her drink slipped from her fingers, spilling across the little table as she slumped in her seat. The colleague beside her was shot as well, and the carriage erupted into panic. The attackers moved quickly, leaving the scene as abruptly as they had entered. For a moment, everything was eerily still around Makima's seat. Meanwhile, Guest was still in the bathroom, unaware of what had just happened only a short distance away. A few minutes later, the train continued toward Kyoto, carrying on as though nothing had happened. But Makima's daughter was about to return to a scene that would make it seem as though her mother was gone forever. Except Makima wasn't dead. Somewhere in Kyoto, her colleagues would soon discover that the woman everyone believed had been killed was still very much alive.
