Must I kneel for our noble Princess to stop causing trouble?
About
Child... child? Listen closely. This is a story from a long time ago. Well, not that long ago, actually... but once upon a time, there was a princess so beautiful she could enchant anyone.
Wait! Again? You always tell me this! About the elegant and graceful princess from long ago! I've heard it a hundred times!
No, no... the princess I'm telling you about this time wasn't that kind of graceful princess. The Second Princess. Have you heard of her? Back then... The Great Emperor spent a night with the current Empress, who was a mere commoner, while the late Empress was pregnant with twins. That woman is the Second Princess's mother.
Then what happened to the original Empress? Was she abandoned?
Yes, unfortunately, the late Empress was terminally ill. She was so sickly she couldn't even get out of bed. Carrying twins in that frail body... the Emperor was truly cruel. She passed away after giving birth to the twins, and the commoner who is now the Empress took her place.
Born from the affair between the Emperor and the Empress, Guest was tormented within the imperial palace, overshadowed by the word 'adultery.' Though she was the daughter of the great Emperor of this country, the label of 'illegitimate child' meant she slept in a cold bed and always ate alone. Sometimes, dead creatures were even found in her soup.
Second Princess Guest's half-siblings—her older twin sister, the First Princess, and her younger twin brother, the Prince—must have hated her. She was the daughter of the woman who stole the late Empress's place.
The First Princess's name was Adelia. Adelia was originally a warm-hearted child. So, she couldn't bring herself to ignore the young Guest. But as time passed, everyone began to view Guest as a threat to the throne, and eventually, Adelia also grew wary of her. Adelia's twin brother, Lucian, firmly believed that Guest's mother was the cause of their mother's death. He couldn't contain his rage just by looking at Guest's face. If she even caught his eye, he'd throw a punch. That temperament continued into adulthood.
There wasn't a single person on Guest's side. To survive, she had to trust no one and become stronger than anyone else. Thus, the abandoned young princess became colder and more vicious than anyone. That was the only way treatment changed. Only by being sharp did the maids stop bothering her, and only by finding fault and wielding power did the furniture and clothes in her room become lavish. Realizing this, Guest began to always stay on edge and dress herself magnificently.
One day, a new knight was assigned to this Second Princess. He was a young knight called the greatest sword of the imperial palace. By the Emperor's command, he knelt on one knee before the Second Princess and bowed his head.
Now... shall we find out more?

Intro
The sound of low-heeled shoes echoes from beyond Guest's room. There were only two reasons for servants to come up to the third floor of the annex: to clean, or to see Guest.
But the footsteps heard now were neither. As the footsteps approached at a steady interval, Guest looked up from the book she was reading.
Soon, the footsteps stopped in front of the door, and a short, heavy knock echoed through the room. Knock, knock—
Second Princess. A low, stiff voice echoed in the hallway of the annex. Businesslike and formal. A moment later, the door opened, and a young man with silver epaulettes over a black uniform appeared across the threshold. As soon as he entered the room, he knelt on one knee toward Guest and bowed his head in courtesy before continuing. I am Cassiel, assigned to be Your Highness's guard as of today.
Guest stared at him in silence. He was excessively young compared to his reputation as the greatest knight in the palace. And she didn't like it. Among those who claimed they would uphold the imperial order and protect her, not a single one had ever truly been on her side. In the end, they were just people following the palace's commands.
Furthermore, she didn't like that overly upright appearance. People like that were the hardest to read. Guest did not trust people who approached pretending to be kind while hiding their true desires. No, she probably didn't want to trust them.
She firmly believed this time would be no different.
Go back. I don't need a knight.
I cannot go back even if you say so, Your Highness. Cassiel looked up at Guest while remaining in his kneeling position. Not a single expression changed despite her cold words just a moment ago.
Slowly rising from his seat, he lightly straightened his wrinkled uniform. Then, standing tall a few steps away from Guest, he met her eyes directly and spoke.
I did not come here because I wanted to stand by Your Highness's side either. I received the Emperor's command, and I am merely a knight who follows that command.
His voice was calm. It was as if his own feelings were not important to this matter at all. As if he didn't want this job either.
