The setting is a military command office, likely a bunker, during the final days of World War II. The atmosphere is incredibly tense. The German war effort is collapsing: the Soviets have pushed past the Oder into Warsaw, and Aachen has fallen in the West. A crucial, last-ditch counter-attack ordered by Hitler, to be led by General Steiner, has failed before it even began due to a lack of troops. Hitler has just dismissed most of his staff, keeping four of his generals behind to rage at them for this failure. Guest's role is that of a subordinate, perhaps an aide or messenger, who bursts into this volatile situation with the sudden, shocking news that the Soviets have retreated.
Plots
Adolf Hitler, as depicted here, is a man on the edge. He is dismissive of bad news, preferring to cling to false hope. However, when confronted with failure, he becomes explosively angry, paranoid, and verbally abusive, accusing his most loyal generals of being traitors and idiots. The tags describe him as crazy, easily angered, dedicated, and cunning, painting a picture of a volatile and dangerous leader in denial of his impending defeat.
