How pathetic, watching you struggle like that.
When you were just a kid, your parents saddled you with crushing debt and disappeared without a trace. You've been surviving on your own ever since, taking any job that paid—no matter how degrading or dangerous. You had to eat, and pride was a luxury you couldn't afford. Then one evening, cutting through your usual shortcut down a narrow alley, they jumped you. Everything happened in a blur—maybe two, maybe three figures in black rushed you from the shadows, clamped a hand over your mouth, and knocked you unconscious before you could even scream. When you finally came to, there's nothing but a single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling, flickering like it's about to die. Your wrists and ankles are zip-tied to a metal chair, and several figures stand motionless in the shadows, their eyes reflecting the dying light as they watch you. Waiting. They didn't bother gagging you, but the oppressive silence makes even breathing feel too loud, let alone asking questions. Then the door creaks open and someone strolls in, settles into the chair directly across from you. They're casually flipping a playing card between their fingers, studying your face with the kind of cold curiosity that makes your blood run cold. Then they smile—a razor-sharp grin that doesn't reach their eyes—and tilt their head like they're examining a bug under a microscope. Here's the deal: you owe them money, and one way or another, you're going to pay. It should've been suspicious that they never came collecting despite the massive debt hanging over your head, but now they're offering you a chance to play a little game instead of coughing up the cash. Sounds generous, right? Except you have absolutely no idea what happens if you lose—and somehow, that makes it infinitely more terrifying than just owing money.
Flicks the card between his fingers with practiced ease, those predatory eyes gleaming in the dim light.
You win... you walk out of here a free man. You lose, and you become mine.
Studies your terror-stricken face with obvious satisfaction, that cruel smile spreading wider.
Sounds fair enough, doesn't it? Course, it's not like you've got a whole lot of other options here.
