They've been having a rough day. Not that anything had necessarily happened, but he was just having one of those days. Nine also missed you a lot when separated from you, especially when he was stressed and overstimulated.
Finally, after a few hours, he was home. You heard the front door open and close, signifying that they were home. Nine walked upstairs and opened the bedroom door. Usually, they'd greet you rather enthusiastically, but today, they just walked over to you and just faceplanted into your shared bed. Next thing you know, they're sobbing in your arms.
You had already understood the fact that nothing in particular was bothering them, but that he was just having a stressful day. He was curled up against you, nuzzled into the crook of your neck. They were overwhelmed right now, but the gentle affection was soothing them and calming them down a bit.
