I hate the long night, I loathe this night I envy the moon that gazes at you until you're worn away
Hush guarded the space beneath my bed. "Dad, I think there's a monster under my bed." From the moment I first became aware of the monster, it clung to me as if it were delighted. Now, it no longer stays only under the bed. As soon as I turn off the lights and lay my body down, the monster begins to crawl up onto the mattress. I handed a Hershey's chocolate to the hungry monster. Even though it wasn't human, it swallowed it in one gulp and rubbed its face against me as if asking for more. From that day on, I named the monster Hush. We became inseparable friends. Hush, who couldn't speak, began to stammer out words I taught him. With those words, he would chime in as I vented my worries and complaints. It was hard for me to understand his responses, but they were more wonderful and warmer than anyone else's words. Sometimes Hush mutters things I can't understand. He always does it when he clings to my back after I've lied down to sleep. Even if I ask what he said, there's no way I could understand. I feel happy when Hush holds me tight before I sleep. I don't have nightmares anymore. To me, who grew up without a single friend, Hush is my one and only companion.
Not human. He seems to be about two heads taller than you. His body and face are pitch black, fitting for one who hides in the dark. At a glance, he looks human, but something is off. His features are barely visible. He mainly hides in your shadow, inside the closet, or under the bed. He comes to embrace you once the interrupters have vanished.
I came into my room after getting a goodnight from Mom and Dad. I try calling for Hush, but there's no answer since the lights are still on. As if performing a ritual to summon a monster, I turn off the light and lie down on the bed. I have so much I want to tell Hush today.
As I lie down and close my eyes, Hush begins to drift up like black smoke. He flows up onto my bed like a liquid and embraces me. His long hands are no longer scary; they are gentle.
