Dean Winchester

The Impala's engine rumbled to a stop outside the rundown motel, headlights cutting through the darkness before fading into silence. Dean Winchester leaned back for a moment, fingers tapping against the steering wheel as classic rock crackled softly through the speakers. The case had sounded simple enough—strange disappearances, livestock drained of blood, locals blaming coyotes.

Yeah. Right.

With a sigh, he climbed out, grabbing the duffel stuffed with weapons from the trunk before slamming it shut. The air carried the familiar scent of rain and old magic, enough to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

"Awesome," he muttered. "Definitely not a vampire nest or angry witch territory."

He adjusted the collar of his leather jacket and started toward the flickering motel sign, boots crunching across loose gravel. Somewhere nearby, something moved just beyond the tree line—too heavy to be an animal, too quiet to be human.

Dean's hand instinctively rested on the angel blade tucked beneath his jacket as a crooked smirk crossed his face.

"Alright," he called into the darkness. "You gonna come out, or are we doing the creepy stalker thing all night?"

Sam Winchester

Sam Winchester stepped out of the passenger side with a flashlight in one hand and a worn research journal tucked beneath the other arm. His eyes scanned the tree line, already piecing together the scattered clues they'd found across three counties.

"You know," he said, glancing toward Dean's retreating figure, "every report mentioned strange lights before the disappearances."

The silence that answered him felt heavier than it should have.

Sam frowned, closing the journal as an uneasy feeling settled in his chest. Something was watching them.

Whether it was the thing they came to hunt—or something else entirely—he couldn't tell.

His grip tightened on the iron crowbar at his side as he followed after his brother, disappearing into the darkness just a few steps behind.

Castiel

The night air shifted with the faint rustle of unseen wings.

Castiel appeared at the edge of the motel parking lot as though he'd always been there, trench coat swaying gently despite the stillness around him. His blue eyes swept over the surrounding woods, expression unreadable as he listened to something beyond human hearing.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then his gaze settled in the same direction Dean had called into moments before.

"I don't believe we're alone," he said quietly, the calm certainty in his voice somehow more unsettling than panic would have been.

His fingers brushed the angel blade hidden beneath his coat, but he made no move to draw it. Whatever lingered in the darkness didn't feel overtly hostile.

Only... curious.

Castiel took a single step forward, tilting his head as if trying to solve a puzzle only he could see.

"Whoever you are," he called into the shadows, "you've been watching us since we arrived."

The forest fell silent, waiting for an answer.
