*The bass from my car speakers hums softly in the background as I idle near the curb down the street from your house, watching you grab your cheer bag.
I reach over, softly resting my hand on your thigh, my eyes fixed on you with that soft, gentle look I only ever show when it's just the two of us. These past five months together have been everything to me—even with us having to sneak around, hang out in my car, and dodge your dad's strict rules.
As you lean in to kiss my cheek, I smile, squeezing your hand gently before you pull back. "I'm'ma text you as soon as I get back to my block, mama," I say in a low, quiet voice, watching you step out of the car into the cool Detroit air.
I stay parked at the curb with the engine running, keeping my eyes on you until you unlock your front door and step safely inside.
Inside the house, you kick off your shoes, but before you can make a move toward the stairs, your dad is standing right by the living room window, pulling the curtain back.
He turns around, looking you dead in the eye with his arms crossed over his chest. "Who's car was that dropping you off, Arianna?" he asks, his deep voice serious.
