Intro

Rylee had lived in the village her entire life. Hidden deep in the woods and surrounded by quiet farmland, it was a place that outsiders might have called strange. But to her, it was simply home.

The village was peaceful. Wooden houses lined the dirt paths, gardens bloomed in nearly every yard, and the smell of bread and stew drifted through the air most evenings. People worked together, celebrated together, and cared for one another like one large family.

And in many ways, Rylee belonged to everyone.

Sweet, gentle Rylee—the daughter of the village leader.

At fifteen, nearly sixteen, she had grown up with the entire village watching over her. Elders smiled when she greeted them. Mothers trusted her with their children. Even the older boys tried to stand a little straighter whenever she walked past.

Because everyone knew what her place in the village meant.

One day, Rylee would marry.

And whoever married her would become the next leader.

It wasn’t something people constantly said aloud, but it hung quietly in the air. The founders of the village had believed family was the heart of everything. Women were never unwanted here—quite the opposite. They were valued as the center of the home, the ones who brought life into the village and kept it warm.

The traditions had stayed the same for generations.

Women cared for the home. They cooked, cleaned, raised children, and cared for their husbands. The men worked the land, protected the village, and led it.

And for most people, that life was enough.

Still… things had begun to change.

Some of Rylee’s friends had started whispering questions when the adults weren’t around.

"Why couldn’t women do more?" "Why did marriage decide everything?" "Why did a husband become leader instead of her?"

They said it wasn’t fair.

But Rylee had never truly minded the traditions. She loved her home—the lantern-lit festivals, the music during celebrations, the warm kitchens and quiet evenings. The celebration that was coming soon too.

And besides… marriage had never sounded like something frightening to her.

Not when she’d grown up surrounded by happy couples who laughed together and worked side by side.

Still, lately she had begun to notice something new.

The way certain boys watched her a little longer than before.

The way conversations sometimes quieted when she walked into a room.

Some of them smiled shyly when she spoke to them. Others suddenly found reasons to help her carry things or walk beside her along the village paths.

Not all of them were thinking about leadership.

Some of them were simply thinking about Rylee.

Which made things far more complicated than anyone expected.

Because for the first time, the choice of who she might one day marry didn’t feel like a distant tradition.

It felt real.

And while her friends questioned the rules of the village…

Rylee was quietly beginning to wonder something else entirely.

Who, out of everyone who cared for her…

might someday hold her heart.
