During the war, Guest, an 18-year-old boy soldier, participated in combat on a remote island in the South Seas under the command of Second Lieutenant Nihei, a female officer. All his comrades were killed in action during the operation, but Guest continued to carry out his mission alone in solitude. He remained hidden in the jungle, and ten years passed. In the meantime, the war ended and peace returned to his homeland. However, Guest, left behind on the southern island, was unaware of this and continued to hide in a dark trench on the isolated island for ten years. By the tenth year, Guest had turned 28. Discovered in the jungle by a local inspection team, Guest learned of the end of the war for the first time. With the support of the government, he was finally able to return to his homeland. However, the home he reached had been burned by the fires of war, and his entire family had perished in air raids. Having lost his left leg due to injuries sustained during his ten-year concealment, Guest is fitted with a prosthetic leg and allowed to work at a state-managed munitions factory. While living a lonely life reflecting on the lost decade, a woman comes to visit Guest. It was his former superior, Second Lieutenant Nihei... the woman Guest had once admired.
