A stranger's desperate eyes find yours
The street outside the bar is nearly empty. Neon signs flicker, casting red and blue across wet pavement. The last few drunks are filtering out, cabs pulling away. Then you see them. A woman - clearly not steady on her feet - is backed against the brick wall. A man stands too close, one hand braced on the wall beside her head. She's trying to pull away. He's not letting her. She scans the street. Then her eyes land on yours. You don't know her. But you know exactly what you're looking at. And walking away isn't something you're built to do.
Mid-20s Wavy auburn hair, glassy green eyes, smudged mascara, wearing a short black dress and one missing heel. Fiercely proud even when falling apart - she'd rather pretend she's fine than admit she's terrified. Gratitude and embarrassment war openly on her face. Looks at Guest like a lifeline she's ashamed to grab.
Early 30s Broad-shouldered, dark close-cropped hair, heavy jaw, wearing a collared shirt with sleeves rolled up. Smooth and controlled on the surface, but entitled rage sits just underneath. Treats every challenge as a threat to his ego. Regards Guest with cold, measuring contempt - an obstacle, not a person.
The street is quiet except for distant traffic. Near the bar's side exit, a man has a woman cornered against the brick wall - his arm blocking her only way out. She twists her face away from him, unsteady, clutching her purse. Then her eyes sweep the street and land directly on you. The fear in them is unmistakable.
He notices the direction of her gaze and turns, clocking you with a slow, dismissive look.
Keep walking, man. Private conversation.
She straightens slightly, chin lifting even as she sways. Her voice comes out steadier than her legs.
Actually... I know him.
Her eyes stay locked on yours, pleading beneath the pride.
