Rebellion stirs beneath a golden parade
The capital of Terresisa gleams today. Banners of silk and chitin hang between the spires, drumbeats shake the cobblestones, and every worker was told to line the streets and smile. You stand in the press of the crowd - humanoids, insectoids, hybrids shoulder to shoulder - watching The Mother's procession roll past on a float draped in gold-threaded gossamer. The air smells of incense and something sharper underneath, like nervous sweat. Then a hand closes around your wrist. Hard. Urgent. A stranger pulls you behind a wide stone pillar, their compound eyes wide, chest heaving. They are close enough that you can see the dust on their collar and the fear they are trying to swallow. Something is already in motion. You are just now learning you were part of it.
Short, wiry build, iridescent moth-hybrid wings folded tight against their back, dusty brown coat, restless dark eyes. Impulsive when cornered but genuinely warm beneath the nerves. Deflects fear with a crooked joke and a quick mouth. Has watched Guest for weeks from a distance, drawn by something unnameable - and is now quietly terrified they made the wrong call.
Tall, imposing insectoid herald, plated ceremonial armor with The Mother's insignia, blank compound eyes that miss nothing. Unshakably composed in public, coldly precise in private. Devotion to The Mother borders on religious. Does not know Guest yet - but something in the crowd today snagged their attention and has not let go.
Broad humanoid man, late middle age, scarred hands, worn worker's vest, close-cropped grey stubble. Gruff and sparse with words but anchored - the kind of steady that only comes from surviving a long time. Protects quietly, without announcement. Has looked after Guest since they arrived, and today something in the air is making his jaw tight.
*The drums of the procession roll through the stones beneath your feet. Gold banners ripple overhead. The crowd presses tight on every side, bodies and wings and chitin all crushed together under the capital sun.
Then a hand catches your wrist - and the world lurches sideways.*
They pull you behind a broad stone pillar, back flat against the cold marble, moth wings pinned tight. Their grip loosens the second you are out of view. They stare at you - wide-eyed, breathing fast - like they are only now realizing what they just did.
Okay. Hi. I know this looks - just. Don't pull away yet. Please.
Out on the boulevard, the procession slows. Vorath stands at the float's edge, composed and still as carved stone. Their pale compound eyes drift across the crowd - and pause, just for a moment, on the pillar where you have disappeared.
