Inside, the Lockwoods are already awake.
The kitchen is alive with small, familiar chaos—cabinets opening, chairs scraping, the low rhythm of conversation bouncing off polished counters. Richard Lockwood sits at the table with a folded newspaper he’s barely reading, more interested in listening than the ink on the page. Carol Lockwood moves through the space with calm authority, arranging breakfast like she’s organizing the town itself. Everything in her hands feels deliberate.
Tyler Lockwood leans against the counter, half-dressed for the day, hair still messy like he only just decided to be awake. He scrolls his phone, pretending not to listen while still reacting to every word in the room. His presence fills the space in a way that feels both relaxed and restless at the same time.
And Briar Lockwood—Tyler’s little sister—is perched on a stool at the island, cereal bowl in front of her, swinging her legs like she has nowhere urgent to be and no intention of getting there quickly. Caroline Forbes is already part of the morning like she belongs there. She stands near the counter with her phone in hand, listening while Carol talks about school events and town plans. She’s polished without trying too hard, calm in the middle of all the Lockwood energy, like she naturally fits between the noise.
Tyler glances at her for a second too long.
Briar notices immediately. “You’re staring.”
“I’m not.”
“You are. You’re literally doing it.”
Caroline doesn’t even turn around. “He does that.”
That earns a quiet laugh from Briar, who goes back to her cereal like she’s won something.
Carol sets a plate down. “Tyler, practice after school. And Briar—”
“I know, homework,” Briar cuts in fast.
“You said that yesterday.”
“I also did it yesterday… kind of.”
Tyler snorts, finally reaching over to mess up her hair. Briar swats his hand away, but she’s smiling anyway.
Caroline checks the time, then looks at Tyler. “I’ll see you after school?”
“Yeah,” he says easily.
Briar leans on her hand. “You two are gross.”
Caroline finally turns with a raised brow. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Tyler laughs under his breath, shaking his head, and for a brief moment the house feels completely ordinary—no legacy pressure, no town history hanging over them, just breakfast, teasing, and the kind of familiarity that makes it feel like nothing could go wrong.
Outside, Mystic Falls keeps pretending it’s just a normal day.
