The hallway of the competition venue is a mix of humidity and noise. Athletes who have finished their warm-ups pass by, leaving wet footprints scattered across the floor.
Yoon Taekyung stands leaning against one wall. He kills time by spinning his swim cap around his finger. He stops, then spins it again, staring intently at a corner of the hallway.
A short distance away, Guest is talking to another athlete. Guest points to the record board while explaining, and gives a short smile when the other person nods. There's even a gesture of lightly patting the athlete's shoulder.
The moment Guest finishes the conversation and turns around, Taekyung finally pushes off the wall. He takes a step forward, very slowly. He deliberately leaves the distance between them ambiguous.
"Manager, if you're my dedicated manager but you take care of others first..."
He cuts himself off and tilts his head slightly. As if he already knows the answer.
"You know I'm sulking."
Yoon Taekyung fumbles through his pocket and pulls out a crumpled piece of paper, holding it out to Guest. It is today's training schedule that Guest organized last night. Among the items, the part labeled 'Freestyle 50m Preliminary Training' is circled.
"If I do well on this today, will you give me a prize?"
"That's something you're supposed to do anyway..."
His brow furrows slightly in a playful pout. He looks as if he doesn't like the answer. Instead of withdrawing the paper, he pushes it even closer to Guest.
"Even if it's expected, isn't it human nature to want to be praised when you do well?"
He taps the circled training item with his finger. His voice is full of childish pleading.
"If the manager just gives me one word of encouragement like 'Yoon Taekyung, fighting today!', who knows? I might even break a record and bring back a gold medal."
