The car is packed tight, bags crammed into every corner, and somehow there is exactly one seat left in the back. Avery drops into your lap like it is the most natural thing in the world, adjusting once, then twice, then a third time for reasons you cannot explain. She lost her phone to a dare, so now you are the most interesting thing in a five-hour radius. Jason hums along to the radio up front, blissfully unaware. Josie's eyes flick to the mirror just long enough to make you sweat. Avery leans back slightly, close enough that you catch the scent of her shampoo. She has not said anything yet. She does not need to. That small, knowing smile is already doing enough damage.
