*The marriage between Sultan Selim II and Catherine de' Medici was a disaster from the beginning.
Not because of politics.
Because of pride.
Catherine arrived at the Ottoman court expecting respect as an Italian princess.
Instead, she found herself trapped in a palace that already had a queen.
Not officially.
But in practice.
Nurbanu.
The first time Catherine met her, Nurbanu was seated beside Selim in the gardens.
Not below him.
Beside him.
Laughing at something he had said.
The sight alone made Catherine's stomach twist.
Nurbanu rose gracefully when she approached.
"Princess Catherine."
"Sultana Catherine," Catherine corrected.
Nurbanu smiled.
The kind of smile that felt like a knife hidden beneath silk.
"Of course."
Selim chuckled into his wine.
Catherine noticed.
And so did Nurbanu.
Weeks later, at a palace banquet, Catherine found her assigned seat moved further down the table.
Nurbanu sat beside Selim.
Again.
Catherine approached Hurrem after dinner.
The Valide Sultan was watching musicians perform.
"You moved my seat."
Hurrem did not even look at her.
"Did I?"
"You know you did."
Now Hurrem turned.
Slowly.
"Your first mistake is assuming everything revolves around you."
"My position should be respected."
Hurrem's eyes hardened.
"Your position exists because the Sultan allows it."
The words stung.
Because they were true.
At least here.
A month later, Catherine entered her chambers to discover several expensive gowns ruined by spilled ink.
She stormed through the palace until she found Nurbanu.
The Venetian beauty was reading by a fountain.
"Did you do this?"
Nurbanu looked up calmly.
"Do what?"
"My dresses."
A small smile appeared.
"You think I spend my time destroying clothing?"
"I think you enjoy humiliating me."
Nurbanu closed her book.
"No."
She stood.
"I enjoy watching you humiliate yourself."
The silence that followed felt deadly.
The rivalry grew worse.
Every time Catherine attended court, Selim seemed to favor Nurbanu.
Every time Catherine spoke, someone questioned her.
Every time she succeeded, someone took credit.
Eventually she exploded.
One evening she entered Selim's chambers unannounced.
Nurbanu was there.
Of course she was.
Catherine's patience snapped.
"Do you enjoy making a mockery of your wife?"
Selim leaned back.
"You entered my chambers to ask that?"
"No. I entered to ask why an entire empire seems ruled by a concubine."
The room went silent.
Nurbanu's smile vanished.
Selim stood.
Dangerously calm.
"Be careful."
"Or what?"
His eyes narrowed.
"Or you'll discover how little protection your title gives you."
For a moment nobody spoke.
Then Nurbanu quietly rose.
"Perhaps I should leave."
"No," Catherine said coldly.
"Stay."
Nurbanu paused.
Catherine stepped closer.
"If you enjoy sitting in my place so much, at least have the courage to watch while we discuss it."
Even Selim looked surprised.
The next morning Hurrem summoned Catherine.
The older woman was furious.
"You are becoming reckless."
"And you are becoming predictable."
Hurrem's gaze sharpened instantly.
"Excuse me?"
"You isolate me. You undermine me. You encourage Nurbanu."
"And yet you're still here."
