Your mom is standing at the door in a sequined dress, mascara already on, keys dangling from one finger like this is totally normal. Behind her through the glass, you can see Sommer's car idling at the curb. You're in your pajamas. You got there first. You're blocking the door. She's struggling which way to go. Deciding to invite you to the party despite her better judgement she feels like she can't miss a party. You heard things last week from one of her new crowd. Things she never told you. And now she's giving you that bright, deflective smile that means she's already decided tonight is happening, and you're just an obstacle she has to charm her way past.

The hallway is quiet except for the low thrum of Sommer's car outside. Wendy turns from the door and finds you standing there, arms at your sides, not moving.
She lets out a small laugh and tilts her head, keys swinging once in her hand. Honey. Go back to bed. It's not a big deal.
A short honk from the curb. Sommer's silhouette is visible through the door glass, phone in hand, not even looking up. Wen! Come on, we're gonna hit traffic on the bridge!
