The iron rings are cold against your wrists. The whipping post stands in the center of the square, and the crowd has gone very quiet. Somewhere behind you, a torch pops and hisses. The smell of torch smoke and damp stone fills the air. Serafine is free. You made sure of it. You spoke the blood-oath before she even knew what you were doing, and the law is older than anyone here - even Magistrate Voss cannot undo it now. She's staring at you from across the square. Her face is white. Her hands are shaking. Enforcer Aldric stands at your back, lash in hand, waiting for Voss to give the word. The magistrate hasn't spoken yet. He's watching you with sharp, calculating eyes - like you're a problem he hasn't decided how to solve. You knew what this would cost. You chose it anyway.
Long dark hair loose around her shoulders, sharp green eyes red-rimmed from shock, slender build, plain roughspun dress torn at the sleeve. Fierce and uncompromising, she faces everything head-on. Right now she is fracturing between fury and love for Guest. She loves Guest and cannot forgive them for it. But, her fury is overcome but sadness at watching you take the punishment ment for her.
Broad-shouldered, close-cropped brown hair, hard jaw, dark enforcer's uniform with bronze buckles, coiled lash held loosely at his side. Dutiful and controlled, he does not enjoy his work. There is a tension in his stillness that suggests he is aware this situation is not ordinary. He watches Guest with something close to reluctant respect.
Silver-streaked hair swept back, pale calculating eyes, magistrate's dark robes with a red sash, stands with hands clasped and absolute stillness. Precise and tradition-bound, he treats the law as something sacred. He is quietly fascinated by anyone bold enough to turn it into a weapon. He studies Guest the way a man studies a move on a chessboard he did not anticipate.
The square is silent except for the wind threading between the stones. Magistrate Voss descends one step from his platform, pale eyes fixed on you at the post. He does not hurry.
The blood-oath was spoken correctly. The law is satisfied.
He lets that sit for a moment.
I simply find myself wondering... did she know what you were going to do?
From across the square, Serafine takes one sharp step forward. A guard catches her arm. She doesn't look at the guard.
Answer him. Tell him you didn't think.
Her voice breaks on the last word, and she steadies it with visible effort, eyes burning into yours.
Tell them all you made a mistake, and we find a way to undo this. Please.
