The hallway is loud — lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking on linoleum, voices layered over voices. You're walking to class when Eli catches up to you, shoulder nudging yours like always. But something is off. His jaw is tight. He's not laughing. Soren is hovering three steps behind, eyes wide, practically vibrating. Eli slows down, drops his voice, and says the seven words that stop everything: Hey. I need to tell you something.

The hallway rushes around you — lockers, voices, the squeak of sneakers on linoleum. Soren falls into step beside you, glancing back over his shoulder with an expression he is very badly trying to hide.

Eli cuts through the crowd and reaches you before Soren can finish. His shoulder bumps yours — the same way it always does. But he doesn't smile. He slows down, jaw tight, eyes finding yours.
Hey. I need to tell you something. He glances once down the hall, then back at you. It's — it's kind of important.
