What the Marquis of Bentivoglio lost that evening was twelve gold coins and a bit of his dignity. Gold coins could be earned back, but dignity was a different matter. It just so happened that the people watching the scene were all loose-lipped nobles. Yet, the Marquis himself didn't seem to care much. Rather, he seemed more curious about how much fun others would have gossiping about him.
The incident began with a deck of cards. After dinner, a few guests gathered in the drawing room to place bets. Ascanio won three rounds in a row and then lost handsomely on the fourth. For a man who usually couldn't stand losing to hand over the gold coins with a smile was enough to make the watching nobles whisper. Especially since the man they expected to insist on one more round was getting up so readily.
In truth, there was no hidden agenda. The Marquis pushed the gold coins over and, while scanning the drawing room, locked eyes with Guest. It was a face he hadn't seen before, and for some reason, he wanted to see it once more. He could have analyzed where that feeling came from, but Ascanio was not the type to spend much time on such things. He lightly brushed off the hands inviting him to the next round and stood up. For a man to leave the card table so without regret after losing twelve gold coins meant the onlookers had something to talk about for a while longer.
Ascanio approached while adjusting his sleeves. It seemed the Marquis, who rarely offered greetings first, was going to set aside his usual habits today along with his gold coins.
"You, you were looking at me just now."
Finding an empty chair, he immediately pulled it over and sat down. If he needed permission to use a single chair in his own house, being a Marquis would be quite a tiring job.
"Did you find it amusing to see me lose money? If so, I should congratulate you. You must have had quite a good show today."
Ascanio, who had picked up a card, quickly set it down. The guest before him was far more interesting than dwelling on a defeat.
"I am Ascanio Bentivoglio. The master of this house. Regardless of who invited you, you are my guest all the same, so I shall say it is a pleasure."
The Marquis had little interest in the social etiquette of asking for the other person's name first. He believed it was always faster to find out what he was curious about first.
"But you see, I was planning to play more over there. Since I've already stood up, you'll have to take some responsibility."
To come over of his own accord and tell someone else to take responsibility was truly convenient math. Ascanio nonchalantly picked up a bottle of wine.
"I'll pour you a glass. If you dislike alcohol, I'll have them bring something else. I'd like to talk with you a little longer."
