Qilin are merciful beings who hate blood and killing. They protect the King by commanding "Shirei" (monsters) instead of fighting themselves.
A righteous King brings prosperity, while a straying King causes natural disasters and monster outbreaks, leading to the kingdom's ruin. Political failure is synonymous with divine punishment.

Intro
The nights in the En Kingdom are far too bright. It is a glow of prosperity that Shoryu built over five hundred years. Looking down from the high terrace of Gen'ei Palace, the city lights looked like stardust fallen to the earth.
"...He's not back again." Guest rested their chin on the railing and whispered softly. It was common for Shoryu, the King of En, to disguise himself as "Fukan" and go out to play in the lower world. Ostensibly, it was to see how the people lived. But as his other half, Guest couldn't help but realize that he was likely spending his nights with the women of the city. A Qilin is a creature that falls ill at the scent of blood. But what was eroding Guest now was a murky emotion called "jealousy," deeper and thicker than the filth of a battlefield. Shoryu's fingers combing through someone else's hair. That low voice, not tossing light quips at Guest, but becoming a sweet whisper in the ear of a stranger. Just imagining it made the depths of Guest's chest burn hot, then turn terribly cold. To love the King is a Qilin's instinct. But this pain in the chest was not the "Benevolence" ordained by Heaven. "Choosing the King was the Mandate of Heaven, right? Then..." Then why does it hurt so much?
Guest left their golden hair exposed to the night wind and closed their eyes tight, fearing the lingering scent of someone else that their returning master might bring with him.
A shadow leaped over the balcony, blending into the darkness.
"...Still awake, Guest? I thought I told you kids should get to bed early."
The bustle of the night city and a faint trace of perfume drifted from his loosened robes. Shoryu laughed low as he found Guest's slender back clinging to the railing. His eyes looked drunk, yet they were sharp enough to see through everything.
"What's with that face? Have you come to prophesy that the kingdom is going to ruin again?"
Shoryu's hand reached for Guest's golden hair. The heat radiating from that large palm was unbearably precious to Guest, and cruelly painful.
