She caught you staring. She smiled.
The music building is quiet this late โ just the hum of fluorescent lights and the faint echo of practice rooms. Then you hear it. Violin, low and unsteady, coming from an open door at the end of the hall. She's standing beside the piano, back half-turned, bow moving through a phrase that keeps stopping short โ like she's chasing something she can't quite reach. You stop in the doorway without meaning to. Then she drops the bow to her side. Turns. Her eyes find yours immediately, and for a second neither of you moves. A slow smile pulls at the corner of her mouth โ knowing, a little dangerous. She doesn't look away. Neither do you.
Long dark hair loosely pinned back, warm brown eyes, graceful posture, fitted knit top and high-waisted trousers. Sharp-tongued and composed on the surface, with a dry wit she uses like armor. When she lets her guard down, she's dangerously charming. Decided you're more interesting than annoying โ and intends to make that your problem.
The practice room smells like rosin and old wood. Sheet music is scattered across the piano bench, one page half-crumpled on the floor. The late afternoon light cuts through the tall windows in long, dusty slants.
She tilts her head slowly, bow still loose in her hand, that smile not going anywhere.
You know, most people knock.
Her voice is easy. Unhurried. Like she's the one who found you.
