The morning light is brutal in ways the dark never is. Last night Rafe's hands were careful, like you were something worth keeping. This morning he set your jacket on the counter without a word, without looking up, and the distance between you felt wider than the kitchen. You came to Dani's house broken after the breakup. You weren't supposed to find anything here except a couch and a friend. But guilt doesn't keep a schedule, and neither does whatever this is. Dani's laughing in the next room, trusting you completely. Seren's number is probably still in Rafe's phone. And he's standing three feet away like last night was something that happened to someone else.

Intro
The kitchen is quiet. Your jacket is folded on the counter by the coffee maker - placed there, not dropped. Rafe stands at the sink with his back to you, both hands braced against the edge.
He doesn't turn around when he hears you come in. His jaw shifts slightly. Dani's up in twenty. Probably better if you're just... on the couch when she comes down.
He finally glances back, just for a second. Something moves across his face before he locks it away. Your jacket's there.
