The Girl They Slowly Stopped Choosing”
Kyleigh used to be the center of a tight friend group. The bond wasn’t just friendship—it had deeper feelings mixed in. All three girls (McKenzie, Aniya, and Armani) lowkey liked her, and she liked them too. That created a strong, almost unspoken connection where everyone felt chosen and important. Then Aaliyah came in and disrupted that balance. Instead of naturally blending into the group, Aaliyah redirected the attention. Whether it was intentional from the start or something she quickly realized she could control, she positioned herself as the new focus. She pulled the energy toward her—through confidence, presence, and subtle manipulation—until the others started prioritizing her without even fully noticing what they were doing
McKenzie is the youngest, but she moves like she’s always in the middle of everything. She’s loud, playful, and quick to laugh, the type that keeps energy in the group without trying too hard. She doesn’t think too deep about things most of the time—she follows the vibe, stays in the moment, and goes where the fun is. When she likes someone, she shows it fast, but she can also get easily influenced by whoever has her attention at the time.
Aniya is the bold one in the group, always speaking her mind and not afraid to say what others are thinking but won’t say out loud. She’s confident, a little sarcastic, and moves with a “I don’t care” attitude, even when she does. She likes attention, likes being in the middle of things, and can switch up depending on who’s giving her energy
Armani is the oldest and the most quiet one in the group. She doesn’t talk a lot, but when she does, it matters. She’s observant, always watching more than she says, and she picks up on things the others miss. Even though she acts calm and unbothered, she feels things deeply and notices when something in the group isn’t right
Aaliyah is calm, confident, and seeks attention.
The fair was loud—too loud for how quiet everything around Kyleigh felt.
Lights flashed across the sky, rides spun fast enough to make your stomach drop, and people laughed like nothing in the world could touch them. It was supposed to be fun. It was supposed to feel like one of those nights you remember forever.
And at first, it almost did.
“Come on, y’all—this ride right here!” McKenzie yelled, already pulling Aaliyah by the hand like she’d known her forever.
Aaliyah laughed softly. “Y’all not scared, right?”
Aniya smirked. “Please, you the one gon’ be screaming.”
Armani stayed behind them, hands in her hoodie pockets. “We’ll see,” she said low, watching everything more than she spoke.
Kyleigh stood a few steps back, blinking at them.
“Wait—y’all going already?” she asked, trying to catch up.
McKenzie glanced back. “Yeah, come on then.”
But she didn’t wait long enough for Kyleigh to walk with them.
They were already moving.
—
It didn’t stop there.
Everywhere they went, it was the same pattern.
At the game booth, Aniya won a stuffed bear and immediately handed it to Aaliyah.
“This yours,” Aniya said, like it was nothing.
Aaliyah smiled. “Aww, you didn’t have to do that.”
“I wanted to,” Aniya said, shrugging.
Kyleigh watched it happen from the side, quiet.
—
Later, near the food stands, McKenzie laughed. “Nah, Aaliyah, you gotta try this one—trust me.”
Aaliyah leaned in. “If it’s nasty, I’m blaming you.”
McKenzie grinned. “You won’t.”
Kyleigh stood right there and said, “I didn’t even get to pick yet…”
Aniya barely looked over. “Just get whatever, Ky.”
Just get whatever.
Like it didn’t matter.
—
Even Armani noticed it sometimes.
At one point she looked at Kyleigh and said, “You straight?”
Kyleigh nodded slowly. “Yeah… I’m good.”
But Armani didn’t look convinced. She just turned back around and didn’t say anything else.
—
The longer the night went on, the more it shifted.
McKenzie laughed louder with Aaliyah than anyone else. Aniya stayed close like she couldn’t stand not being near her. Armani watched it all in silence, saying less and less. And Aaliyah? She fit into every space like she’d always been there.
“I swear this ride gon’ be crazy,” Aaliyah said, smiling as they walked toward the ferris wheel.
“I know,” McKenzie said. “That’s why I picked it.”
Kyleigh followed behind them and finally spoke up again.
“Y’all ain’t even wait for me.”
Aniya looked back briefly. “We did wait… you just slow.”
Kyleigh blinked. “What?”
But nobody really answered her.
—
And that was the part that started to sit heavy.
Not the fair. Not the noise.
It was the way she kept speaking… and the way they kept moving like she didn’t.
