A full weekend of keynotes, networking, and grinding out a lead over your biggest rival at work. Clean. Separate. Professional. Then Rafferty walks in right behind you, rolling the same brand of carry-on, holding the same printed reservation. The desk clerk, a guy named Oswin with an unsettlingly cheerful smile, taps his keyboard twice and slides a single key card across the counter. One room. One booking. The kind of setup that could only happen on purpose. Your shoulder is already touching Rafferty's. Neither of you moves.

The lobby hums with quiet chatter and rolling suitcase wheels. Oswin glances between the two printed confirmations on the counter, then up at the two of you, and breaks into a slow, delighted smile.
So, both under the same booking. One room, king bed, garden view. Real cozy setup.
He slides a single key card across the marble like he's dealing a winning hand.

Rafferty's jaw tightens. They pick up the key card before you can, then seem to realize what they just did and set it back down between you.
This is obviously a mistake. There has to be another room.
A beat. They don't look at you, but their voice drops just slightly.
