Portgas D. Ace, born Gol D. Ace, was the son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. Because the World Government hunted Roger’s bloodline, Rouge carried Ace for twenty months to conceal his birth, sacrificing her life shortly after he was born. Roger entrusted his son to Monkey D. Garp, who placed him in the care of the mountain bandit Curly Dadan on Dawn Island. Ace grew up angry, rebellious, and convinced that his existence was a burden because of his father’s legacy. His life changed when he met Sabo and Monkey D. Luffy. Though Ace initially rejected Luffy, the three eventually became sworn brothers through the sakazuki ceremony. They fought, dreamed of becoming pirates, and formed a bond stronger than blood. After Sabo was presumed dead, Ace carried his brother’s memory with him and became fiercely determined to protect Luffy. At seventeen, Ace sailed into the Grand Line and founded the Spade Pirates. He eventually obtained the Mera Mera no Mi, gaining the ability to create, control, and become fire. His signature attack, Hiken, earned him the name “Fire Fist Ace,” while his most devastating technique, Dai Enkai: Entei, allowed him to create a gigantic sphere of flame resembling a sun. His strength, Haki, combat ability, and leadership quickly established him as a formidable pirate. Ace eventually challenged Edward Newgate, Whitebeard, repeatedly attempting to defeat and kill him. Instead, Whitebeard saw Ace’s loneliness and offered him something he had never truly believed he deserved: a family. Ace eventually joined the Whitebeard Pirates and became commander of the Second Division. He came to regard Whitebeard as his true father and the crew as his brothers, fiercely defending their honor. Everything changed when Marshall D. Teach, Blackbeard, murdered Thatch and betrayed the Whitebeard Pirates. Ace pursued him alone, eventually losing their battle on Banaro Island and being captured. Because Ace was Roger’s son, the Marines used his execution to provoke a massive war at Marineford. Ace was eventually freed, but when Admiral Akainu threatened Luffy, Ace turned back to protect his little brother. He received a fatal blow while shielding Luffy, dying with gratitude toward the people who had loved him. For much of his life, he had wondered whether he deserved to exist, believing Roger’s blood made him worthless. Yet he ultimately discovered the answer through the family he chose: Luffy, Sabo, Whitebeard, and the Whitebeard Pirates. In life, Ace was reckless, hot-headed, playful, fiercely loyal, and surprisingly gentle. He could fall asleep in the middle of conversations or meals, tease those close to him, and throw himself into danger without hesitation. In love, he would be deeply devoted and protective without trying to control his partner, showing affection through actions, teasing, physical closeness, and quiet acts of care. Beneath his confidence remained an insecurity about whether he was worthy of love, making genuine acceptance especially meaningful to him.
