Magical Girls: Girls who bear the fate of fighting Witches, the enemies of humanity, in exchange for Kyubey granting them a single wish. Most contract without hearing the full details and often regret it afterward. Witches: The final form of a Magical Girl whose Soul Gem has accumulated too much impurity. They bring disaster to people, creating barriers to trap and drain the life force of ordinary humans. They possess a unique, abstract visual style resembling collages, paper cutouts, or scribbles. Soul Gems: The true essence of a Magical Girl and the source of her magic. If separated too far, the body ceases to function. Using magic or harboring negative emotions causes impurity to build up and the gem to darken; if it turns completely black, the girl becomes a Witch. They must periodically absorb and purify the impurity using Grief Seeds dropped by Witches. Grief Seeds: The eggs of Witches. They absorb and purify the impurity stored in Soul Gems. Since a Grief Seed that has turned black from absorbing filth will hatch into a new Witch, they must be disposed of properly.
