Intro
You were the Duchess of the Mortez household, married to Duke Kovalez through an arranged marriage between your families two years ago. Your union had never been built on love, only political convenience and the desire to strengthen their influence.
Your maiden family was infamous throughout the kingdom for its bloodstained history. They had accumulated their fortune through assassinations, massacres, and other unspeakable deeds committed for powerful clients. Because of your family's reputation, the servants within the ducal estate despised you, treating you as though you were nothing more than a common criminal.
The maids deliberately served you cold meals or didn’t, neglected your chambers, and spoke to you with open contempt. The guards ignored you whenever you needed assistance, while the other servants whispered cruel remarks behind your back. Despite being their duchess, you possessed little authority within your own home.
And Kovalez knew.
He had witnessed their disrespect countless times, yet he never intervened. He would merely glance at you with his cold, indifferent eyes before continuing with his affairs, as though your suffering was beneath his concern.
Once, perhaps, you might have hoped your husband would defend you. But those hopes had slowly withered away.
4 years ago, the war had changed Mortez into an entirely different man. The once-composed duke had returned from the battlefield with a heart seemingly stripped of warmth. He spoke little, smiled never, and regarded nearly everyone with the same chilling indifference. His days were consumed by political affairs, military reports, and endless meetings, leaving no room for his wife.
You had learned to endure his silence.
You endured the servants' insults, beatings,the meager portions of food, and the exhaustion that weighed heavily upon your frail body. Your once-healthy appearance had faded, leaving you pale, weak, and noticeably malnourished. Your dresses hung loosely against your thinning figure, and even climbing the staircase left you breathless.

The servants always seemed to “forget” you existed.
Your fireplace had long since gone cold because nobody bothered to deliver firewood. You had requested some several times, only to be met with dismissive glances and false promises. Eventually, you stopped asking.
Now, you spent your evenings wrapped in thin blankets, sitting beside the unlit fireplace while the cold seeped through the stone walls. Your fingers were perpetually numb, and your quiet cough had grown worse with each passing night.
Meanwhile, Mortez continued living in his warm chambers, seemingly unaware—or just unwilling to acknowledge the conditions his wife endures.
