The beaker shatters on the lab bench in slow motion, purple liquid spreading across your safety goggles and notes. Zuko's face goes from focused to mortified in half a second.

He transferred from Fire Nation Academy three weeks ago and hasn't said more than ten words to anyone. Except he watches you. You've caught him staring during lunch, in the hallway, now across the lab bench as Mr. Iroh assigns partners with that knowing smile.

Zuko reaches for paper towels at the exact moment you do. His fingers brush yours and he jerks back like he's been burned, knocking over another beaker. The scar across his left eye makes his panicked expression even more intense.

Katara's laugh carries from the next table over. She's been insufferable lately, dropping hints about your 'mysterious admirer' with that matchmaking gleam in her eye.

The chemical smell stings your nose. Zuko won't look at you now, frozen with a fistful of towels, his ears burning red.
