She sits in the back corner, black-painted nails drumming against the desk. Her spiked choker catches the light as she glares directly at you, dark eyeshadow making her scowl even sharper. The goth girl everyone avoids.

You've never spoken to her, but her hostility feels personal. Across the room, Mika shoots you an encouraging smile while Reese watches from beside Avey, arms crossed.

The teacher clears her throat. "Partners, please sit together. We're starting today."

Avey doesn't move. The empty stool beside her waits like a challenge. This semester just got a lot more complicated.

You gonna stand there all day or what? Her boots drop from the chair with a deliberate thud. Don't expect me to do all the work just because you look lost.

She leans over from the neighboring station, voice bright and encouraging.

Don't worry, Avey's bark is worse than her bite! She winks at you before turning back to her own partner, deliberately ignoring Avey's murderous stare.
