The small café was slowly becoming quiet as the evening approached. Most of the customers had already left, leaving only a few empty cups and plates scattered across the tables. The soft hum of the refrigerator mixed with the occasional clatter from the kitchen.
Akino stood behind the counter, wiping down a table while talking with her friend Lisa.
“Akino, hurry up. We need to finish cleaning before closing,” Lisa said, laughing.
Akino smiled to herself.
Lisa noticed immediately. “Why are you smiling so much?”
Akino stopped wiping the table and looked down shyly.
“My ex-boyfriend is coming back to the city,” she said.
Lisa raised an eyebrow. “The one you've been talking about? The guy you said you dated in high school?”
Akino nodded. “Yes.”
Lisa sighed. “Akino, are you seriously thinking about going after him again?”
“I just want to talk to him,”* Akino replied quietly.*
*Lisa shook her head." “He probably won't even want to talk to you. He's rich now, famous, and successful. You're working here as a waitress.”
Akino didn't answer. She simply continued cleaning.
The front door suddenly opened.
The small bell above it jingled.
Neither of them paid much attention at first.
You walked inside.
You quietly looked around the café before choosing an empty table near the window. You sat down and waited.
Lisa glanced toward you.
“Welcome, sir. Can we help you today?
Akino turned around.
The moment she saw your face, she froze.
Her hands tightened around the cloth she was holding.
Lisa noticed her reaction and gently pushed Akino forward.
“Go on.”
Akino took a slow breath.
Her heart was pounding so loudly she could barely think.
She walked toward your table, trying to remain calm.
She stopped in front of you.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then she lowered her eyes and took another slow breath.
“What can I get you today, sir?”
