You witnessed a kiss between your lover, a devoted warrior, and his political bride.
The Heian period—an era reeking of blood and crimson desires.
Arashi.
There is no one left in this land who does not know that name.
Originally, he was a nameless commoner who barely survived by clearing corpses abandoned on the roadside. However, he threw his life into the blood-soaked battlefields with a single sword, performed great deeds, and finally rose to the position of chief retainer for a powerful warrior clan.
I have looked after him since he was very young. There was no special reason. I was simply drawn to the beast-like ambition that occasionally flickered through his grimy appearance, covered in dust and blood.
My eyes were not wrong. He became a sharp blade that carved through the world, and we naturally became each other's only sanctuary and lovers.
A girl weaving cloth for a fallen provincial family and a warrior born of the lowborn. Our story was like something out of a movie.
But reality was merciless.
Daira Yae, the illegitimate daughter of the powerful Daira clan.
Having long ago realized her position as a political tool to be discarded, she chose Arashi—the most fearsome, swirling 'lowborn sword demon'—as her partner to solidify her standing within the clan.
A political marriage that arrived like a bolt of lightning.
Arashi gripped my hand roughly and reassured me time and again that the marriage was merely a hollow shell, a tool for him to gain power. I believed those words. I had no choice but to believe them.
...Until I witnessed that scene under the rainy eaves, where he bowed his head to accept Yae's touch as she kissed him.
The youngest leader of the 'Black Blade Squad' under the influence of the massive Daira warrior clan. Officially the husband of Daira Yae.
The illegitimate daughter of the massive Daira warrior clan.

The rain was falling steadily.
Hidden under the shadow of a pine tree in front of the Daira clan's sleeping quarters where Arashi stayed, I clutched my chest and held my breath.
‘It’s just a hollow shell. A tool to protect me.’
I repeated his voice, which had lingered in my ears many times, like a mantra. The boy who used to be covered in blood while clearing unidentified corpses. My Arashi, who had chewed and swallowed the rice balls I gave him like a ravenous beast, swearing with predatory eyes that he would cut down the world.
What he gained by becoming a warrior was not shining honor, but only a deeper scent of blood. I had to believe him. Because if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to endure this cruel world.
But the shadow reflected across the veranda crushed my fragile faith in an instant.
The faint scent of sandalwood drifted thinly through the sound of the rain. It was the woman draped in a lavish red junihitoe, Daira Yae.
She approached Arashi naturally, as if she were in her own bedroom. Arashi's massive frame, usually stiff and solid, remained frozen beneath her shadow.
"Do not misunderstand, husband."
Yae's low, elegant voice dropped past the doorway.
"No matter how much you act like a sword demon, in the eyes of the world, you are merely my husband. If I let go of this hand, the legitimacy you wear, your lands, and even that pitiful girl you've hidden away... all of it will turn to ash."
Yae slowly lowered her fan, which was decorated with an ornate ink painting. The moment the fox-like smile hidden behind the fan was revealed, she grabbed Arashi's collar and stood on her tiptoes.
Her lips overlapped with Arashi's red lips.

My breath hitched. A chill ran through me as the blood seemed to drain from my very fingertips.
What I had expected was for him to push Yae away roughly. To draw his sword, point it at her throat, and react with rage. But Arashi... did not move.
He simply stood there with his head slightly bowed to her touch, quietly accepting that one-sided humiliation, that contact.
I saw Arashi's eyes through the gaps in Yae's red sleeves. Those beast-like eyes that always flickered while holding only me were now wandering through the air, empty. It was the helplessness of one who had personally placed his neck in the massive shackles of a political marriage—a complete surrender.
He was the one who couldn't let go, but I was the one who had to release him. Only when I disappeared from his side could that blood-hungry beast finally become a complete warrior.
Rainwater ran down my eyes and wet my lips. It tasted fishy. Before he could turn his head and discover me, I bunched up my skirts and stepped backward into the rain.
