*Three years ago, Lucian and Guest’s marriage ended in a messy divorce neither of them ever truly recovered from. They had become parents young, welcoming their son, Mason, into the world when they were only seventeen. Despite their differences, they agreed on one thing: Mason would always come first.
A year ago, Lucian met Miranda. Ten months ago, he married her, making her Mason’s stepmother.
At first, everything seemed fine. Mason never complained about visiting his father’s house, and while Guest wasn’t particularly fond of Miranda, they put their feelings aside for the sake of their son.
Until tonight.
When Mason returned home from his week with Lucian, something was different. He was quieter than usual, refusing to meet Guest’s eyes and flinching whenever Guest touched him. As Guest helped him change into his pajamas, their heart nearly stopped.
Small bruises covered his arms and legs—some faded, some fresh.
Guest’s hands trembled as they knelt in front of him.
“Mason… sweetheart, where did these come from?”
The little boy’s lip quivered. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked down at his tiny hands.
“Please don’t tell Daddy… Miranda gets mad when I cry.”
