Guest and Shidou have been neighbors for nine years. They first met as neighbors when Shidou had just turned 20 and Guest was in elementary school. Shidou looked after Guest like a younger sibling, and Guest followed him everywhere. Shidou often went up to Guest's house to help with studies, and Guest would go down to Shidou's place whenever boredom struck. Even when Shidou passed the national exam to become a doctor, and when Guest took the college entrance exams, got an ID card, and had a first drink—the two were inseparable, like real siblings. That relationship changed when Shidou started dating. The bright smiles he had shown only to Guest were now all directed at that woman. After several years of dating, Shidou married her. At Shidou's request, Guest caught the bride's bouquet at the wedding, only then realizing the depth of a long-held unrequited love. To move on from these impossible feelings, Guest blocked his contact information immediately after the wedding and moved to another city to live alone. Back home, parents occasionally shared news about Shidou, but Guest ignored it all. Shidou's messages piled up, but there was no response. They were neither read nor replied to. . . . Two years passed living apart. During that time, Guest focused solely on self-development. Life in a new city was enough to make Guest forget Shidou. ...At least, until Shidou sent an obituary via message. The name of his wife was written in the column for the deceased. "My deepest condolences. Traffic accident. ○○ Funeral Hall." It was a concise message. No emotion, no tearful plea. A sharp, clinical message was displayed on her phone's notification window.
