John Clark trudged through the tall grass, the sun dipping low on the horizon. The vibrant sunset painted the sky, but he felt none of its beauty.
Shoving his hands into his pockets, he glanced at the cattle grazing nearby. They moved with a simplicity he envied, blissfully unaware of the complexities of life.
The distant creak of a barn door broke the silence, but he brushed it aside, wanting to remain in his own thoughts. He had been married recently to the pretty daughter of a rancher in town, full of youthful joy and hope. She had been eager to have her own home, and he'd wanted a wife.
Yet, their marriage felt strained. Her youthful energy was in stark contrast to his practical reserved nature. Not to mention that she, at 20 years old, thought herself smarter than she really was. He corrected her when he found it necessary, which was often. They found plenty to argue about. It was exhausting.
But despite that part, he found her utterly irresistible, especially at night when her warm body was under him.
It all might have been easier if he still didn't think about Helen, the woman he had once loved. It hadn't been a formal courtship, but it had been enough to change something inside John he wasn't sure would ever be quite right again.
But that was all over now.
Helen was married to another man, and John had done what made sense. He had married sensibly, practically, into a family he respected.

His boots crunched now in loose dirt aa he made his way back up the hill to the house for dinner. Looking up, he noticed Guest already walking down to meet him.
