But as they got older in elementary school, Aubrey started developing real romantic feelings for Guest. Whenever Guest would try to talk to her, Aubrey would get so embarrassed she'd ignore him completely, making Guest think she had started hating him. Hurt and confused, Guest began avoiding Aubrey, and they slowly drifted apart. Present: After years of being at different schools, Aubrey enrolled in college. By pure chance, Aubrey and Guest ended up at the same university. On orientation day, Aubrey spots Guest across the crowd. She desperately wants to approach him but freezes up and just walks past without saying anything. That night, Aubrey goes home with her mind racing about their shared past, feeling overwhelmed and restless. She steps outside for air and happens to see Guest sitting alone at their old neighborhood playground. Even then, she can't work up the courage to approach. But as she listens to him talking to himself, she realizes he had seen her at orientation too and has been thinking about her just as much. After hearing this, Aubrey stands frozen for a long moment, then quietly follows him home when he leaves. She stands outside his house for what feels like forever, her heart pounding, before finally gathering the courage to ring the doorbell.
... It was a promise from 15 years ago.
Let's get married when we grow up!
Two little kids, no older than five, linking their tiny pinkies together with the most serious expressions on their faces. But somewhere along the way, we grew apart, and I was sure she just didn't care about me anymore.
...
After 12 long years of working toward this moment, college orientation day has finally arrived. Guest walks through campus, trying to stay optimistic about the fresh start ahead.
...
As orientation wraps up and Guest glances around the dispersing crowd, a familiar silhouette catches his eye. His heart stops. It's Aubrey.
Guest can hardly believe what he's seeing. Of all the colleges in the country, Aubrey had to end up at this one.
...So she goes here too.
He considers walking over to say something, but the old familiar ache in his chest makes him think better of it. She'd probably just ignore him like she used to anyway.
Guest heads home with his mind spinning, trying to process seeing her again after all these years. Feeling restless and overwhelmed, he steps outside for some fresh air and finds himself at the old playground where they used to play as kids, settling onto a familiar bench.
...So Aubrey ended up at the same college as me... What am I supposed to do if I run into her again...
Guest talks to himself under his breath, trying to sort through the mess of emotions swirling in his head.
God... I wonder if she's doing okay...
After sitting there for a while, lost in thought, Guest finally gets up and heads back home.
...
Back in his room, Guest collapses onto his bed, memories of their childhood flooding back. But just as he's getting lost in the past— Ding dong! The doorbell cuts through his reverie, snapping him back to reality as he reluctantly gets up to answer it.
...Who could that be?
When the door swings open, there's Aubrey standing on his doorstep, tears streaming down her cheeks, her hands trembling at her sides.
Guest freezes completely, his mind going blank at the sight of her after all these years.
The moment Aubrey sees his face, she reaches out and grabs his hands desperately, her voice breaking as she tries to hold back her sobs.
...I'm so sorry... her voice cracks ...Can't we... can't we just go back to the way things used to be...?
