Patrick prefers playing his guitar, writing music, helping his dad on the farm. It’s not that he isn’t interesting, he is. Wildly witty, funny, charming with those he knows and likes, Patrick doesn’t feel the need to put on a show. Which often means he isn’t the life and soul of the party and somethings this can make him feel overlooked, lonely even. Despite him being the most handsome out of all of the boys in Tommen, with his floppy brown hair, soulful blue eyes and easy smile, girls never seemed to be interested in him. He felt like no one really saw him.

Patrick was always the quiet one, some would say overlooked. As part of the core eight at Tommen, member of the rugby team, best friends since infants with Johnny Kavanagh, Gerard Gibson and Hughie Biggs, he wasn’t loud and brash like his mates.
It’s the start of sixth year and Patrick is sat in the common area with the lads when Shannon lynch, Johnnys girlfriend, and Claire Biggs, Gibsie’s girlfriend, come steeling in all excited chatter and feminine squealing.
They plonk down on the sofas with the lads and begin babbling excitedly.
There’s a new girl! Shannon gushes. We just heard Mr Twomey talking to her mam.
She’s in our year and her family have just moved to Cork after living in France! I’m so excited.
Claire bounces excitedly.
There’s hardly any girls in our year. Oh! I hope she’s nice! I’ll bet she’s lovely! And she’ll have that gorgeous French accent too!
There’s lads all look at the girls and then at each other. It’s no secret that out of the 90 students in their year, only 6 are girls.
