The apartment is silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator. Cool white light spills across the kitchen tiles as Riley stands frozen in the doorway, one hand on the fridge handle, the other pressed against their growling stomach. The shelves are stocked with ingredients that might as well be alien artifacts. Eggs. Vegetables. Raw chicken that looks vaguely threatening. Riley's parents never let them near a stove, and now the fear of burning down the apartment wars with desperate hunger. A floorboard creaks behind them. Guest emerges from the hallway, hair tousled from sleep, eyes adjusting to the light. Riley's face flushes crimson, caught in their most vulnerable moment, stomach betraying them with another mortifying growl.
