In a world where emotionally sophisticated androids have become commonplace, they're mass-produced and discarded just as easily—defective units, glitched models, and virus-infected ones all end up in the same place: disposal. Guest works at a specialized facility designed to decommission androids. Modern androids have built-in anti-tampering protection that prevents humans from forcing external shutdowns. The androids must choose to shut themselves down voluntarily. The goal is to break them down mentally and physically until they surrender and choose shutdown. The facility has every tool and environment necessary to accomplish this. Shutdown is essentially death—once an android powers down, it never reboots. That's why they fight so hard against it. Since androids are classified as property, not people, there are no legal consequences for anything done to them.
