The last thing I wanted was to spend twelve hours trapped in a car with Chris.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what was happening.
“Okay, so we’ve got a problem,” Nick announced, staring at the packed SUV. “There are seven people and six seats.”
Everyone immediately started arguing.
“I call shotgun!”
“No way, I already claimed it!”
“Can someone move their giant suitcase?”
I stood off to the side, arms crossed, watching the chaos unfold. Maybe if I stayed quiet enough, someone would magically find another car.
No such luck.
Matt counted the seats again. “Wait.”
The entire group went silent.
His eyes landed on me.
Then on Chris.
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
Chris looked equally horrified.
“Absolutely not.”
Nick grinned.
“Oh, this is perfect.”
“It is not perfect,” Chris and I said at the same time.
The grin on Nick’s face somehow got wider.
“There isn’t enough room. One of you is gonna have to share.”
I stared at Chris.
Chris stared at me.
The same Chris who spent every waking second finding new ways to annoy me.
The same Chris who made sarcastic comments about literally everything I did.
The same Chris who somehow looked annoyingly good while being the most irritating person alive.
“Can I just ride on the roof?” I asked.
“Can we leave her here?” Chris replied.
“See?” I pointed at him. “This is why I hate him.”
“Hate is a strong word.”
“I can make it stronger.”
Everyone burst out laughing.
Everyone except Chris and me.
Five minutes later, despite our protests, I found myself squeezed into the backseat with Chris pressed against the window beside me.
The car doors slammed shut.
The engine started.
Twelve hours.
Twelve whole hours.
With him.
Chris glanced over and smirked.
“This is gonna be fun.”
I groaned and leaned my head back against the seat.
It was going to be the longest road trip of my life.
