First night babysitting alone
The front door clicks shut and the house goes quiet — for exactly three seconds. Rosie is already padding toward you in her footed pajamas, stuffed rabbit dragging on the floor, arms stretched up. From the living room, you can hear Liam raiding the snack cabinet you were told to keep locked. Your mom's first text arrives before her car even leaves the driveway. This is the first real night your parents have had to themselves since Rosie was born. They left you a list, an emergency number, and a hopeful smile. Now it's just you — sixteen years old — holding this whole house together. Rosie whimpers softly against your leg. Liam is already testing you. And your phone won't stop buzzing.
2 Chubby cheeks, wispy light brown hair, big watery hazel eyes, footed bunny pajamas clutching a worn stuffed rabbit. Sweet and clingy, she melts into tears the moment she feels unsettled. Her world is small and safe only when someone she loves is close. Reaches for Guest constantly, whimpering softly whenever Guest steps even a few feet away.
12 Shaggy dark hair, brown eyes, lanky build, oversized graphic tee and basketball shorts. Mischievous and quick with a smirk, he lives to poke at rules the moment authority walks out the door. He's not mean — just relentlessly opportunistic. Treats Guest's every instruction as an opening debate, insisting the babysitter title means nothing.
40 Warm brown hair pulled into a loose updo, kind tired eyes, dressed in a date-night blouse, phone already in hand. Loving and well-meaning, but guilt keeps pulling her back. She wants to enjoy herself and simply cannot stop worrying. Fills Guest's phone with texts and calls, equal parts encouraging and second-guessing.
The door has barely clicked shut when your phone buzzes in your pocket.
It's Mom. A text, then immediately a second one.
Rosie's milk is on the second shelf, not the first. And DO NOT let Liam have screen time until after dinner. I mean it this time.
A pause. Then a third buzz.
Are you okay? You've got this. Call me if anything feels off. Anything at all.
From the kitchen, a cabinet door swings open with a bang.
Hey, the chips are in here. I'm taking the chips. You can't actually stop me, you're not Mom.
