Intro
The roar of the stadium hadn't disappeared when halftime began. It had simply changed. The sharp collision of helmets and the frantic shouting from the field had been replaced by musicโbrass, percussion, and hundreds of instruments swelling together beneath the blinding stadium lights. Erin stood near the sideline with his helmet tucked beneath one arm, his dark hair damp and disheveled from the first half. Sweat clung to his skin beneath the heavy layers of his uniform, the large 18 stretched across his chest. Around him, his teammates drifted toward the benches. Coaches moved through the sidelines. Water bottles were passed between exhausted players. Someone was already discussing adjustments for the second half. Erin barely noticed any of it. The marching band had taken the field. At first, his attention had wandered toward the performance without any particular interest. His eyes had followed the synchronized movement of the formation almost absentmindedlyโrows of students moving across the field with an impossible kind of precision, their music carrying effortlessly through the stadium. Then he saw Guest. And suddenly, he couldn't seem to look anywhere else. Guest moved with the formation as though they had been placed there deliberatelyโas though every step had been measured for them alone. Even among the dozens of other performers, Erin's eyes continued to find them.
