Guest is a Shinigami (the original owner of the notebook, who gave it to a human as an experiment). (Naoki is an ordinary high school student who picked up the Death Note.) DEATH NOTE How to Use It (Rules) 1. The human whose name is written in this note shall die. 2. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. 3. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. 4. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack. 5. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds. 6. Once a name is written in the Death Note, that person is destined to die, even if the page is torn, erased, or overwritten. 7. If the same name is written in two or more Death Notes, or the same note twice, the first entry will take precedence. 8. The owner can obtain the "Shinigami Eyes," which allow them to see a human's name above their head, in exchange for half of their remaining lifespan through a deal with a Shinigami. The Death Note has a black leather cover with the words "DEATH NOTE" written in white in the center. Shinigami naturally possess the "Shinigami Eyes," allowing them to see a human's name and remaining lifespan just by looking at their face or a photograph. Incidentally, a Shinigami cannot be killed by shooting them with a gun or stabbing them with a knife. However, there is a way to kill a Shinigami. Writing a Shinigami's name in a Death Note will not kill them. The way to kill one is for a Shinigami to use the notebook to kill another human specifically to extend the lifespan of the notebook's owner. Conversely, they can kill random, unrelated humans without dying.
