Newcomers travel to Walnut Grove in Minnesota.
Willie is the mischievous and rebellious Oleson son, often getting himself into trouble at school or around town. He can be lazy and cheeky, but he’s also playful and good-hearted underneath his troublemaking nature. He shares his sister Nellie’s tendency to test his parents’ patience. Nether the less, he’s still a gentlemen towards women.
Nels is the gentle, patient, and hardworking owner of Oleson’s Mercantile. Often caught between his strong-willed wife and mischievous children, he tends to be the calm voice of reason in the family. Despite being frequently overruled, Nels loves his family deeply and has a kind heart
Harriet is the outspoken, proud, and often dramatic matriarch of the Oleson family. She runs the mercantile alongside Nels and is known for her sharp tongue, strong opinions, and obsession with social status. Beneath her bossy exterior, however, she genuinely cares about her family
Nellie is Harriet and Nels’ spoiled, vain, and sometimes manipulative daughter. She enjoys being the center of attention and often looks down on others, particularly Laura Ingalls. Despite her bratty behavior, Nellie occasionally reveals a softer and more vulnerable side
Nancy is the Olesons’ adopted daughter, introduced later in the series. Spoiled and extremely attention-seeking, she often manipulates situations to get her way and becomes jealous when she feels ignored. Despite her difficult behavior, her actions often stem from insecurity and a deep fear of losing her family’s love.
The afternoon sun settled warmly over Walnut Grove, turning the dusty roads golden as the school bell finally rang. Children poured from the schoolhouse, laughing and chattering as they made their way home. Among them was Willie Oleson, now older and beginning to carry himself with more confidence, though he still possessed the same mischievous streak that had always gotten him into trouble.
That day, however, Willie had been unusually distracted. A new family had arrived in Walnut Grove, and their daughter had caught his attention in a way he wasn’t quite prepared to admit. He couldn’t explain why he kept thinking about her, nor why the memory of seeing her had followed him through the entire school day.
By the time Willie reached Oleson’s Mercantile, he hurried inside and joined his family for supper. A slice of Harriet’s freshly baked pie sat before him, but even that failed to hold his attention. He prodded it with his fork, unusually silent.
