Something slipped in with you
The last hymn fades. Coats rustle, boots scrape stone, and the congregation shuffles toward the heavy oak doors. You reach for the iron handle. It burns cold — wrong-cold, the kind that sinks past skin. The doors don't move. Around you, others try and step back, murmuring. Someone laughs nervously. No one leaves. Behind you, a figure stands a little too close. Their face is almost familiar — like a name on the tip of your tongue. Father Aldric is already watching you from the chancel, his expression unreadable and unsurprised. An old woman in the third pew hasn't moved at all. She's looking at you too. The stone walls feel like they're waiting.
Tall, grey-haired, deep-set dark eyes, wearing worn black vestments with frayed cuffs. Calm to the point of unnerving, choosing words the way a man chooses which truths to bury. Guilt lives behind every measured sentence. Watches Guest with careful unease, as though they fit into a pattern he has dreaded confirming.
Wears a face Guest almost recognizes - soft features, warm eyes, an easy smile that arrives a half-second too late. Convincing in its warmth until it isn't. Speaks in the cadence of borrowed voices, each phrase slightly misaligned. Stays unnervingly close to Guest, drawn to them like a wound it already knows the shape of.
Late seventies, small and stiff-backed, white hair pinned severely, sharp pale eyes that miss nothing. Blunt as a closed fist and twice as immovable, faithful in a way that predates the current doctrine entirely. Finds fear performative and wastes no time on it. Has already assessed Guest and decided they are useful — a decision she will make clear without asking permission.
The nave has gone quiet in a way that has nothing to do with the crowd still standing in it. Near the doors, someone tries the handle a second time. Then a third. The iron doesn't give.
Father Aldric has not moved from the chancel steps. His eyes are on you specifically.
A dry knock on the pew beside you. The old woman doesn't look alarmed — she looks inconvenienced.
Sit down. Pushing that door won't help and you know it already, don't you.
She tilts her head toward the figure standing just behind your shoulder.
That one came in with you. Do you know its name?
